True, Untold Stories of Mystery from the Sierra Nevada to the North Coast

North of the coast and up into the mountains, California keeps a second history.

North of the coast and up into the mountains, California keeps a second history. Not the one in the guidebooks or the scenic overlook plaques. The one left behind in a foreman’s private ledger, a landmark plaque that never matched the diary in the museum case, a photograph book of men reduced to a name and a height, and a grave two markers deep with no proof either one is right.

This collection gathers eleven true stories the record almost lost. A boy buried on a wagon trail whose death became a murder that never happened, carved in bronze and repeated for ninety years. A Chinese guide who helped talk Frederick Law Olmsted into believing Yosemite belonged to everyone, then vanished from history as one word in a stranger’s notebook. A mining superintendent who walked into the hills with a rifle over his shoulder and never came back, leaving a mine that still carries half his name. A schooner that may have gone down twice, four years apart, under the same name.

Each story is built from documented fact. County ledgers, shipping registries, landmark applications, coroner’s inquests, and the newspapers that covered a disappearance for exactly as long as it stayed interesting. Where the record falls silent, as it often does for the men who built the roads and mines and railroads without ever getting their names spelled the same way twice, that silence is treated as part of the story rather than something to smooth over.

Some of these mysteries were solved decades after anyone still living could confirm the answer. Others were never solved at all, and the ground itself may be the only thing that still knows. All of them happened along country most people drive through on their way somewhere else, at seventy miles an hour, with no idea what’s still down there.
